Blue Hawk men's basketball wins season opener

YANKTON, S.D. -- Despite a 10-point deficit at the half against Mount Marty College (S.D.), the Dickinson State men's basketball team triumphed 77-70 in its season opener.

YANKTON, S.D. - Despite a 10-point deficit at the half against Mount Marty College (S.D.), the Dickinson State men's basketball team triumphed 77-70 in its season opener.

Senior guard/forward Austin Payne led the Blue Hawks with 17 points,

Senior forward Ethan Caton contributed 15 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Junior forward Malcohm Hill performed similarly, netting 11 of his 15 points in the final frame. Junior forward Melvin Collins finished two points shy of a double-double, earning eight points and 11 rebounds.

Dickinson State outrebounded Mount Marty 47-38. The Blue Hawks shot just above 49 percent from the field, 30 percent from behind the three-point arc, but just 55 percent at the free throw line.

The Blue Hawks were down 51-41 with 15 minutes left to play. Starting with a 3-point shot from sophomore guard Tanner Davidson, the Blue Hawks went on a 14-3 run to take a 55-54 lead.

With six minutes remaining, Lancers freshman forward Jonah Larson tied the game at 63, but a jumper from Caton sealed a permanent Blue Hawks advantage.

Jailen Billings led the Lancers with 17 points and four assists.
