Blue Hawks earn third straight NSAA championship

The Dickinson State men and women cross country teams swept the North Star Athletic Association conference meet in Jamestown, each earning its third consecutive championship title on Friday, Nov. 3.

The Dickinson State men and women cross country teams swept the North Star Athletic Association conference meet in Jamestown, each earning its third consecutive championship title on Friday, Nov. 3.

To top off the successful morning, DSU head coach Shayne Wittkopp was named the conference coach of the year.

"Honestly, with the weather being what it was and the competition being what it was, we could not have run better on the men's and women's side," Wittkopp said. "The women had a great performance and finished five in the top ten. The men finished four in the top ten and the 11th runner was one of ours too."

Dickinson State sophomore Jacey Wilson placed second in the women's 5K race with a time of 18 minutes and 48.4 seconds. Freshman Bailey Smith followed close behind, finishing fourth with a time of 19:19. Brittney Grove, Julia Falcon and Lisa Townsend all finished in the top ten. Jade Sheffield and Cassidy Houser placed 11th and 21st, respectively.

Sophomore Marissa Kuik of Waldorf University (Iowa) won with a time of 18:33.

The women earned a team score of 27 points, defeating second-place Jamestown by 39 points.

The men's team placed first with a team score of 43 points, beating out Valley City who earned 66 points.

Senior Christopher Moreno led the men and finished sixth with a time of 25:38 with Rodney Henry finishing behind him with a time of 25:45. Junior Tristen Guillot finished ninth and senior Daniel Aguirre finished 10th.

"Chris ran great," Wittkopp said. "You can't control what the other competitors do. Matt Young (University of Jamestown) ran better than I've ever seen him run. (Nic Ganzeveld) from Waldorf ran really well as well. ... You really can't be disappointed when you go out there and put it all on the line and run well."

Young and Ganzeveld, who earned first and second, were the only runners to finish the 8K in less than 25 minutes, with times of 24:34 and 24:36, respectively.

Following his first year as head coach for the Blue Hawks, Wittkopp was named NSAA coach of the year.

"It feels great," he said. "It's my first year so you learn something new every single day and I'm just glad I didn't mess anything up."

The win qualified the Blue Hawks for the NAIA national meet in Vancouver, Wash., on Saturday, Nov. 11.
