The Jamestown boys hockey team kept calling and calling.
Dickinson didn’t have an answer.
The Blue Jays swung the momentum in its favor with three goals to close out the second period en route to a 10-6 West Region win over Dickinson on Saturday at Dickinson Recreation Center.
“That’s key to make sure to come back out and make sure the puck goes north up in their end,” Jamestown head coach Matt Stockert said. “It’s a huge positive going forward to be able to answer right back.”
Each time the Midgets attempted a comeback, Jamestown answered with a goal less than 30 seconds later.
“Mentally it killed us,” Dickinson head coach Dallas Kuntz said. “We pushed and made two strong comebacks to get two goals. I give Jamestown credit. They pushed and they knew it was going to be one of those games where it was going to be back and forth.
“They got the jump on us in the first period. They scored the first (goal) and we were in catch mode from there.”
Dickinson senior Alex Turcotte said it was frustrating, because the momentum never fully shifted in the team’s favor.
“We worked really hard to get those goals back and then we thought we had the game under control and then we just laid back and played on our heels,” Turcotte said. “You can’t do that against a team like Jamestown.”
After the first period, the Blue Jays (7-10, 7-6 West) held a 2-1 lead. Jamestown extended the team to 3-1 in the second period, but Dickinson posted back-to-back goals to tie the game 3-3.
Andrew Heckaman and Matt Pavek, who scored his second goal of the game, each netted goals midway through the second period to help the Midgets (8-11, 4-10 West) tie up the game.
Jamestown wasn’t even close to done. The Blue Jays posted three unanswered goals in the final 3 minutes, 22 seconds of the second. The three-goal lead was all the momentum Jamestown needed.
“The 7 minutes prior (to the final 3 minutes) was brutal,” Stockert said. “The kids know that and it’s not acceptable as far as their concerned - along with myself. It kind of right moment for us when (Dickinson) put their other goaltender in. It gave us an opportunity to sit back for a second and realize we need to take care of business.”
Jamestown posted four more goals in the third period, which extinguished any chance of a Dickinson comeback.
After Jamestown netted the opening third-period, Dickinson’s Michael McChesney and Kass Dvorak each tallied a goal. Jamestown’s Nick Stockert supplied his third goal 6 seconds later. Stockert finished with three goals and three assists.
The same sequence of events occurred at the 5:44 mark when Heckaman scored cutting Jamestown’s lead to 8-6. Jakobi Lux answered with his third goal give the Blue Jays another three-goal advantage. Jamestown tacked on final power-play goal with 1:15 remaining to seal the win.
Dickinson went through both of its goaltenders - senior Brett Schweitzer and sophomore Eric Schaper. The combined for the 21 saves. Schweizter allowed four goals and have 13 saves, while Schaper gave up six goals and finished with eight stops.
The Midgets continue its West Region season traveling to Hazen-Beulah at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Dickinson has two regular season games before the West Region Tournament which starts on Feb. 13 in Minot.
“You have to win two games at WDA no matter what seed you are,” Kuntz said. “We have two opportunities this week to gain some momentum.”
