MAPLETON -- Dickinson State junior Kelsey Boedeker earned medalist honors Monday at the inaugural Valley City State Invitational golf tournament at the Maple River Golf Club and nearly helped lift the DSU women into the top team spot.
Boedeker played despite illness bothering her on Sunday, shooting a 79 and had an 84 on a windier Monday for a two-day score of 163. She defeated Black Hills State's Brandi Holmes by three strokes in the opening tournament for the Dakota Athletic Conference.
"It was a pretty gutty effort by her part," DSU coach Tim Daniel said.
The Blue Hawks trailed Minot State by 18 strokes after Sunday's round, but shot a 352 on Monday as the Beavers fell back with a 368. Minot State hung on to win with a two-day score of 705. DSU had a 707.
"We thought we were out of it ... and we come back and almost get 'em," Daniel said. "That's really encouraging."

Casey Gleich led Minot State to a win on the men's side with his 69-70-139 performance. The Beavers had a two-day team score of 294-286-580.
DSU took second with a 305-297-602. Kyle Chan was tied for fifth place led the Blue Hawks with a 74-73-147.
Dickinson native Jake Bauer, who competes for Jamestown College, finished tied for third place with a 71-75-146.
