BISMARCK - As time ticked away on its season, a Dickinson High boys hockey senior found a way to give his team a light of hope.
Midgets senior defenseman Tony Kostelecky scored a game-tying goal against No. 6 seed Bottineau-Rugby with 12 seconds left in regulation during the loser-out round of the West Region Tournament at the VFW Sports Center.
The game went to double overtime, where Bottineau-Rugby’s Noah Grant scored his second goal of the day, the game-winner, just 31 seconds into the second extra period. It gave the Braves the 3-2 victory.
Grant had put the Braves ahead 2-1 less than 7 minutes into the third period.
Bottineau-Rugby struck first as Luke Amsbaugh netted a power-play goal in the first period that answered by Dickinson senior forward Matt Pavek with just 1:24 remaining before intermission.
Midgets goalie Gabe Vaagen made 28 saves while Braves goalie Ethan Clements stopped 39 shots.
The Midgets, who came into the tournament as the No. 7 seed, end their season with an 8-14 record.
Bottineau-Rugby (10-12) plays Mandan at 11 a.m. today in a state-qualifying game.
