FARGO - Although Bowman County-Beach and Hillsboro-Central Valley exchanged wins throughout the Class B Dual 5th place match, the Buccadawgs earned seven wins via fall, propelling them to 45-30 win over the Burros on Friday, Feb. 15, at the Fargodome.

"We're matched up pretty evenly, we can't really jump up weight classes like we have in the past," senior Clayton Mattern said of the dual against the Burros. "We just have to wrestle them straight up. Let them do their thing, we do ours."

Mattern certainly did his thing to open the onslaught of falls, pinning Jake Moore in one minute and 45 seconds. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't do the same in his 170-pound semifinal.

Mattern and Jeremiah Sullivan of Central Cass were tied at one through six minutes. With a 3-1 sudden victory, Sullivan advanced to the championship, leaving Mattern to have to settle for third at the most.

Teammate Alex Madrigal also fell in the semifinals in a 10-2 decision to Clay Gerhardt of New Salem-Almont, who trails Lisbon 130-129 in the team scores.

However, one Buccadawg still has a shot at a championship, as senior Beau Jeffers downed Sam Rieger of Lisbon 7-0 at 220 pounds.

In the consolation semifinal dual against Bishop Ryan, Bowman County-Beach was dominant.

While Bishop Ryan picked up three straight wins in the 285, 106- and 113-pound matches, Madrigal topped Bannon Ledoux with a fall in the first period, starting a string of five consecutive wins for the Buccadawgs.

"Those upper guys really stepped it up for us, they thought they'd get big pins on us and they never did," Bowman County-Beach head coach Jeff Boynton said. "We got some big wins there and it just sort of led to the bottom weights and all the way through."

In the middle of those big wins, was Tucker Strand.

After earning a last-second takedown to tie the bout at five, Strand earned the initial takedown in extra time. However, instead of settling for the decision, Strand pushed for a few more seconds and won by fall.

"I knew I was down by four points so I had to take him down a couple times to tie it up," Strand said. "I wasn't expecting to get the pin, but I guess it just kind of happened."

Bowman County sits in fifth place overall with 73 points, while Hettinger-Scranton is 8th with 59.5 points.

On the brink of his fifth straight state championship, Hettinger-Scranton senior Kyle Burwick made quick work of his opponent in the 126-pound semifinal, pinning him in 1:02.

With two wrestlers in the semis, Killdeer didn't advance either, as both senior heavyweight Curtis Hall and 160-pound sophomore Zack Andersen dropped their semifinal matches.

Hall was in a close contest until South Border's Riley Molter got the best of him and won with a pin at 4:37.

"Curtis was working his butt off those first two periods," Killdeer head coach Patrick Schlosser said. "Just kind of pushing him around. He has great defense on his feet. The South Border kid, his strength is on top, so we've been working on getting out of the bottom, but the kid was just better than us on top."

The 106-pound seventh-grader Gus Bohmbach and 138-pound senior Dylan Tabor are still wrestling into Saturday for the Cowboys, as well as Hall and Andersen.

Andersen also lost via pin at the 4:18 mark to Nathan Weigel of Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter.

"Zack's just really young," Schlosser said. "He's a sophomore in that semifinal match. You make a little mistake, a kid like Weigel is going to take advantage of it. He's going to end up winning the match."

Team scores after day two: 1, Lisbon 130. 2, New Salem-Almont 129. 3, Central Cass 87. 4, South Border 82. 5, Bowman County 73. 8, Hettinger-Scranton 59.5. 16, Killdeer 37. 20, Beulah-Hazen 29.
