Capping off a senior season in which he won his fifth-straight state title, Hettinger-Scranton senior Kyle Burwick was named the male recipient of the North Dakota Interscholastic Activities Administrators Association (NDIAAA) state scholarship, according to a press release on Wednesday, April 2.
Burwick, who went 54-0 at 126 pounds this winter, was granted $1,000 dollars to the college of his choice. Following an undefeated junior season, Burwick had a few options, but in November, signed to compete at the University of Wisconsin.
Each year, the NDIAAA combines with Farmers Union Insurance to sponsor a scholarship for one boy and one girl in North Dakota. The Night Hawk athlete was one of six regional nominees up for the award.
Criteria for the scholarship are maintaining a B+ average, being in the top 25% of their graduating class, as well as scoring at least a 24 on the ACT, letter in at least two sports every year, write an essay on how athletics has impacted their life, and provide a letter of recommendation from the school’s Athletic Director.
As the winner, Burwick will next compete against the male winners from five other states for the Sectional Student Scholarship, which grants the winner $1,500.
