JAMESTOWN - The pressure was off and the Dickinson High girls golf team just needed to play.
The Midgets did just that.
Dickinson’s freshman Sydney Charchenko supplied a career-best 93, while senior Rachel Lantz posted a 99 to lead the team during the first day of the East-West Classic at the Jamestown Country Club.
“For it being day one and their first tournament, I was very pleased with how we did,” Dickinson head coach Sara Berglund said. “Sydney was just on spot. She was hitting the ball really well. Rachel had a couple of rough holes in the beginning, but after those rough holes she forgot about them and came back. That’s really tough to do.”
As a team, the Midgets posted a score of 412. For a majority of the team, it was the first time playing at the Jamestown Country Club. One of those first timers for the Midgets was eighth-grader Gabby Knopik, who finished with a 102. Dickinson’s two other scores came from Daisia Wallner (116) and Becca Fry (117).a
“It is a really difficult course to play for the first time,” Berglund said. “You get to those holes that you are really unsure about things and what club to hit, but they powered through.”
Bismarck High’s Katie Kasper leads the East-West Classic with a 73. The Demons golfer, who finished in a tie for fourth at last year’s state tournament, has a three-stroke lead over Fargo Davies’ Jennifer Marsh and Jamestown’s Sierra Bennion. Bismarck has the team lead with a 355, while Bismarck Century is in second (358) and Davies is third (365).
The Midgets continue at the East-West Classic at 7 a.m. today.
“There were a lot of nerves on the bus and they wanted to do really well,” Berglund said. “We just want to go out and have fun. The first tournament isn’t going to go perfectly. We just have to work through it.”
