MINOT - Bismarck Century made the most of its rematch against Fargo Shanley in the North Dakota Class A state volleyball championship match.
A year after losing to the Deacons in the title match, the Patriots broke through, scoring a 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 win on Saturday at the Minot State Dome for the program’s fourth state title and first since 2012.
“It’s an awesome feeling,” Century senior defensive specialist Taryn Neameyer said. “We wanted to achieve this goal all year.”
Century had played in the last five state title matches and seven of the last eight. The Patriots have been runners up the last two seasons. Strong serving Saturday put Century (42-2) over the top.
The Patriots had 14 ace serves in the match.
“We needed to be able to pass on them and we struggled a little bit on our serve receive,” Shanley head coach Curt Johnson said. “That was the difference. Every time we would get close, we’d struggle with our passes. That was our Achilles’ heel and we were not able to recover from it.”
Neameyer had five aces - four of which came in Set 2 alone.
“Our serving shut them down and allowed us to get some momentum,” Neameyer said. “We fed off the serves.”
Sophomore outside hitter Regan Dennis led the Patriots with 12 kills. Senior outside hitter Katie Scherr added nine kills and had an ace to clinch Set 1.
“It’s the best feeling in the world,” Scherr said of the championship. “We did it as a team and played very well as a group this whole tournament.”
Junior middle blocker Emily Dietz led the Deacons with 10 kills. Junior middle blocker Kylee Kanwischer finished with eight kills and two blocks for Shanley (31-5).
“We have a lot of young girls out here,” Johnson said. “We didn’t win, but I thought we played a great match. I’m proud of the team.”
Juniors Hannah Schwartz and Kylee Clarke each had four aces for the Patriots.
