Blue Hawks dominate home track meet

Dickinson State University women soar to victory, Men narrowly miss podium summit at Blue Hawk Games in Dickinson

DICKINSON – The Blue Hawks women’s track team ran away with a victory at the Blue Hawks Games on Sunday, taking more than 200 points to the victory and outdistancing the closest team by almost 70. The men’s team, meanwhile, placed second and missed out on the win by only 16.5 points.

Wrenzi Wrzesinski again turned in a remarkable performance with a national-qualifying time in the 400m hurdles and a first-place 1:02.41 mark, and helped the 4 x 100m relay team of her and Kyley Barrett, Kaitlyn McColly and Jocelyn Ott win the event with a time of 48.36.

DSU’s Jewel Olson also pulled down a first-place time in the 400m dash with a time of 59.11, and McColly notched a win in the 100m hurdles at 14.63, which is tops in the North Star Athletic Association and qualifies her for Nationals. Also qualifying for Nationals in Sunday’s meet were Madison Wahl’s victorious 3.82m mark in the pole vault, along with Tori Nygard’s and Kori Nagel’s second- and third-place finishes in the hammer throw with 51.51m and 49.85m, respectively. Nagel also took second in the shot-put with a 13.48m and teammate Kelsee Cummings took third with an 11.43m throw, and Nagel qualified for nationals with a first-place discus throw of 45.90m.

It was a total-team effort in the Blue Hawk Games, with Barnett taking second-place in the 100m with a 12.99 time and Elizabeth Widmer earning second-place finishes in both the 800m and the 1500m, while her teammate Lauren Taylor nailed down third in both events to help push the scoring in the distance events for DSU. Ott took third with a 5.41m mark in the long-jump, meanwhile, and Adarra Hagelund earned a third-place ribbon for her 1.63m high-jump.

On the men’s side, there were some gutsy performances, including Martin Farver’s top-time of 21.89 in the 200m dash, and Farver also took home a blue ribbon in the 400m dash with a time of 49.15. Teammates Mustafa Taylor and Carl Atkins took third-place in their respective events, meanwhile, and Griffin Obrigewitch and Cole Jensen placed second and third in the 3000m steeplechase with Obrigewitch notching a time of 10:29.66. Tyrel Ackman took second in the 5000m with a time of 18:32.47

The 4 x 400m relay team of Askins, Jensen, Farver and Nathan Schwartz took silver with a time of 3:29.95, and DSU’s B, C and D teams placed third, fifth and sixth in the event, respectively.

DSU’s field events competitors also brought in some points, with Dylan Dahlgren taking third in the hammer-throw with a mark of 49.52m and Dylan Jeffus took fifth in the pole vault with a 3.50m effort.
