MAYVILLE - The Dickinson State and Mayville State men’s basketball teams needed double overtime to determine a winner.
The Comets outlasted the Blue Hawks.
Mayville edged DSU in the final 30 seconds of the game for an 88-85 victory in a North Star Athletic Association game on Saturday.
With 11 seconds left, Mayville’s Josh Dewitt hit one of two free throws to make it a three-point game. DSU’s Jake Gondrezick made a buzzer-beating attempt to tie the game, but missed.
At halftime, the Blue Hawks had a 10-point lead but were outscored 45-35 in the second half, which forced overtime.
Five of DSU’s players were in double figures. Jacob Gondrezick led with 20 points. Tevin Russell netted 18 points and had eight rebounds, Curtis Redd and Mackenson Odenier each had 12 points - Odenier had a game-high 15 rebounds - and Connor Donaldson rounded out with 11 points.
The Blue Hawks outrebounded the Comets 49-35 and had 12 points off their 14 second-chance shots. Both teams were fairly close in shooting percentage. DSU made 42 percent (31 for 73) of its shots, while Mayville hit 44 percent (28 for 64).
Michael Lindsay had 16 points and 11 rebounds while Chuck Robinson led Mayville with 18 points. Jamal Branco had 16 points and seven assists and both A.B. Najee and David Olson finished with 11 points.
DSU returns home to play Valley City State at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
