CLERMONT, Fla. -- Derrick Atkins has secured his ticket back to the Olympics.
The former Dickinson State sprinting standout from the Bahamas ran a time of 10.09 seconds in the 100 meters, well under the Olympic A-qualifying standard of 10.18, at the Star Athletics Meet on Saturday to automatically qualify him for the Summer Olympics in London.
Atkins has battled injury issues the past two years, including taking 2011 off because of kneecap problems. He was among the world's elite sprinters in 2007 when he earned a silver medal at the World Championships in and 2008 when he reached his first Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Atkins will run at the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations National Open on June 22 and 23. There, he could help the Bahamas 400 relay team qualify for the Olympics.
Barry leaps 7-7 at New York Grand Prix

NEW YORK --Trevor Barry tied his season-best mark in the high jump Saturday with a third-place leap of 7 feet, 7 inches (2.31 meters) at the adidas Grand Prix, an IAAF Diamond League event.
The mark was an Olympic A-qualifying standard. Barry, a Dickinson State alumnus from the Bahamas, was qualified for the Summer Olympics in London before the jump.
