DHS boys take 3rd at West Region meet

BISMARCK -- The Dickinson High boys track and field team needed to have a good meet to get third place in the West Region -- and they did exact that.

The Midgets finished third with 93 points during the West Region track and field meet Saturday at the Bismarck Community Bowl.

"I had our boys maybe getting into that 85-to-90 range," Dickinson co-head coach Jay Schobinger said. "I thought our boys had an excellent day."

Bismarck High won the meet with 309.5 points and Bismarck Century finished runner-up (186.5) with Dickinson putting together 93 points.

Dickinson knew senior Brett Braunagel was a special runner coming into the season. He set the state's fastest time in the 100 meters Saturday with a first-place finish of 10.86 seconds. The senior also placed third in the 200 (22.46).

"Brett's a very gifted athlete," Dickinson co-head coach Dave Michaelson said. "This is the first time that he's been able to compete against some of those kids (Bismarck's Randy Tardif and Minot's Karter Gorney)."

The Midgets were without senior Mason Frank and sophomore Jace Dukart for a majority of the meet due to hip pointers. Frank competed in the 100 meters and the 400 relay, while Dukart only ran the 200.

"We had to have other kids pick things up," Schobinger said. "Colbie Wanner gets eighth in the 200. Just places all over, and they just picked up the slack."

Levi Jordheim was the Midgets' lone new individual qualifier on the boys side in the high jump. The sophomore finished third with a state-qualifying height of 6 feet, 2 inches.

The other individual to qualify was Wanner on the 400 relay team.

On the girls side, Dickinson only had one new qualifier and that was senior Madison Deibert in the high jump. She joins fellow senior Leslie Beaudoin to state in the event. Deibert placed fifth (4-11).

"I felt really good for Madi that she was able to do that," Michaelson said. "Now she's a double-event qualifier and that's kind of cool."

As a team, the girls came away with a sixth-place finish, scoring 38.5 points.

"We needed a good meet to be fifth," Schobinger said. "I would say it was an average meet."

The Midgets is now sending 20 individual boys competitors and four relay teams to the state meet. The girls have six individual qualifiers and two relay teams.

Dickinson has about a week of preparation before the Class A state track and field meet begins Friday at the Bismarck Community Bowl.
