DHS falls at regionals

BISMARCK -- The Dickinson High boys tennis team won't be making a return trip to the state team tournament.

Williston topped the Midgets 3-2 in a state-qualifying match at the West Region tournament to earn a chance to represent the West as the No. 3 seed at the state tournament next weekend.

"We had some hard-fought matches ... we just ran out of gas," Dickinson co-coach Larry Dockter said.

Senior Kyle Rummel finished 3-0 in singles play on the day, which saw the fifth-seeded Midgets lose a close 3-2 match to fourth-seeded Mandan in the first round.

After the loss, Dickinson took its frustrations out on eighth-seeded Jamestown, winning 5-0.

"The boys took it to them," Dockter said. "We wanted to get to that state-qualifier."

It was not to be as the Midgets couldn't capitalize. Singles and doubles action starts today and concludes on Saturday.

"We'd like to get five guys qualified for the state tournament," Dockter said. "That's what we're shooting for."
