The familiarity of the West River Community Center pool wasn't lost on Dickinson girls swimmers who compete with Williston.

"It helps a lot," sophomore Alexa Martel said. "You know the pool pretty well. You know when to turn better. You know the walls better."

Martel used her knowledge to earn her first win of the season in the 100 freestyle with a state-qualifying time of 58.59 seconds and help the lift the Coyotes to a 135-45 victory over Wahpeton in a dual that served as a warm-up for today's Williston-Dickinson Invitational.

Senior Madison Porter of Dickinson won the 200-yard individual medley in a state-qualifying time of 2:18.35, and freshman Samie Bohl (1:10.26) edged teammate Ketti Ringwall (1:11.16) to win the 100 backstroke Friday and help.

"It was one of the best times I've ever swam," Martel said of her 100 freestyle time. "It is a personal best."

Both Porter and Martel were double winners. Porter swam the third-leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay team that swam a 4:03.34. Martel was the second leg of the 200 freestyle relay that won in a time of 1:49.26 while joining Ringwall on the second-place 400 free relay squad.

Despite not winning a race, senior Alexis Klug of Dickinson swam a pair of state-qualifying times. She took second in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:12.39. Wahpeton's Kelsey Richels won in 1:12.17. Richels and Klug's times were clocked by hand-held timers since the pool's touchpad system was not functioning.

Klug also took third in the 200 freestyle (2:12.60), coming in behind teammates Kaitlin Bolinske (1:59.94) and Martel (2:10.76).

Bolinske also won the 500 freestyle in 5:17.54, beating Porter's time of 5:33.61 and swam the anchor leg of the 400 freestyle relay. Both were state-qualifying times.
