HAZEN - In head coach Dallas Kuntz’s mind, his Dickinson High boys hockey team played its most complete game Wednesday, a 9-2 win over Oahe (S.D.) High School.
Senior forward Michael McChesney had a hat trick by the end of the first period, and he finished with five total goals with three assists to help the Midgets to victory. Dickinson High also got a hat trick from junior defenseman Matt Tessier and a ninth goal from junior forward Jerzy Martin.
In net, junior goalkeeper Greg Haataja picked up the win by recording 22 saves on 24 shots.
“We played three good periods,” Kuntz said. “We were constantly grinding and winning races to loose pucks. From the opening faceoff, we moved the puck around as a team and never gave Oahe a chance to forecheck us. … (It was a) great way to end 2015.”
Landon Badger scored both goals for the Capitals - one in the first and another in the third.
After several games of Dickinson High’s defensemen not giving much help to the goalkeeper, Kuntz said the team has improved in that area over its last two games.
“We have been stressing to our defense to keep things simple and protect our house,” he said. “They did a good job of getting sticks on pucks and in passing lanes. All loose pucks in front of our net are getting cleared without giving up rebounds.”
The Midgets return to action at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5 at Bismarck High. Their next home game is at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8 against Hazen at the West River Ice Center.
