MANDAN - A second-period blitz from the home team derailed any momentum for the Dickinson High boys hockey team on Thursday, as the Midgets suffered a 5-2 loss at Mandan to open its season.
After battling through a scoreless first period, the Midgets (0-1) opened the scoring with a goal from freshman defenseman Jaren Hugelen 59 seconds into the second frame.
The Braves (2-1) countered with two goals from Alex Horner, two goals from Julian Engler, and another goal from Horner; all goals came in a six-minute span of the middle period. Horner also assisted on both of Engler’s goals, giving him five points on the evening.
Dickinson senior Dawson Kram added his team’s lone other goal 7:30 into the third period.
“Penalties in the second hurt us, but it was a learning experience tonight,” head coach Dallas Kuntz said. “We were very unorganized in our defensive zone. We need to protect our net and play better defensively.”
