BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. - Dickinson High’s wrestling team placed fourth overall at the Belle Fourche Invitational Saturday, a performance driven by nine wrestlers placing in the top eight of their weights.
The Midgets collected 193.5 team points over the two-day event. Sturgis (S.D.) took the top spot with 273.5 points.
“Overall it was good performance by all the kids,” head coach Pete Dobitz said.
Senior Dual Keck picked up a pin and a decision Saturday to place first at heavyweight, and classmate Jaret Lee took first place at 152 pounds via a fall and a medical forfeiture.
Freshman Jaren Berger had a decision but lost also lost by pin on Saturday to place second at 106 pounds. Freshman Brendan Johnson (113 pounds) and sophomore Tod Irwin (132) each took third place in their respective weights.
Tom Irwin, a junior, placed fourth at 145 pounds, and freshman Matthew Meschke (126 pounds) and senior Rafael Lopez (170) each took fifth place. Tate Nordby also placed eighth at 138 pounds.
“A lot of times in wrestlebacks, it’s a lot of resting time,” Dobitz said. “Our kids are physically ready, but just that they were mentally strong, they really kept after it.”
