BISMARCK -- The Dickinson High boys track and field team is in the right position.

The Midgets sent a handful of runners to the finals in open and relay events after the first day of the Class A state track and field meet on Friday at the Bismarck Community Bowl.

"Anytime you can get through the prelims in anything is huge," Dickinson co-head coach Dave Michaelson said. "You don't want to false start. You don't want to do anything silly like that. ... We like where we are sitting and all we have to do is perform well in the finals."

Dickinson had two placers on the day and the big one came during the 3,200-meter relay.

The Midgets came into the state meet with the fastest time during the regular season at 8 minutes, 10.5 seconds. If Dickinson only knew what was in store for them.

"We knew Bismarck High was going to put a good team together," Dickinson junior Austin Mack said. "We didn't let that count us out. We didn't let it get us down. We just said we could run with them and went after them."

Bismarck High dropped the hammer, running Bryce Rohrich, Dylan Werner, Josh Seibel and Jake Leingang to the win in 7:55.15.

The Demons finished the 1,600 open earlier in the day and three of the four runners placed in the top 10. In fact, Bismarck took nine of the top 10 spots, including Leingang whose win in 4:13.62 nearly broke a state record.

So Mack, Michael Porter, Dallas Zastoupil and Joseph Sickler weren't disappointed with a runner-up time of 8:07.17.

"We really are happy," Mack said. "That state championship would have been nice, but this is great and we put it all into this race today."

The Midgets had Brett Braunagel qualify for the finals in the 100 and 200. He ran the fastest time in the preliminaries of the 100 (11.25 seconds). Braunagel edged Fargo North's DeSean Thompson by one one-hundredth of a second and West Fargo's Shane Siverson by two one-hundredths of a second.

"I'm just focusing on warming up well," Braunagel said. "I know it's going to be cold out, so I'm just banking on warming up better than everybody else and outworking them."

Braunagel has already had a busy weekend, going to Williston on Thursday to play for the Midgets in the West Region baseball tournament.

The senior outfielder went 1-for-2 in the opener against Bismarck St. Mary's and helped his team take a 3-1 win. He then traveled back to Dickinson and over to Bismarck on Thursday night.

Dickinson qualified three runners for the finals of the 400. Zastoupil, Jace Dukart and Mack all qualified with hopes of nabbing some points for a Midgets team that sits seventh with 11 points.

The other placer was junior Collin Theilen in the pole vault. He jumped 12 feet, 6 inches for sixth.

"We're really excited for that," Mack said. "It's really good experience for him (Thielen)."

On the girls side, Dickinson didn't place in any events nor did it run a finals qualifying time in the preliminaries. Michaelson knew points were going to be hard to come by, but said the team never once felt defeated.

"The seniors understood they weren't going to be a top-five team or even a top-10 team," Michaelson said. "That's the nice thing about track and field. You can still perform as an individual."

The Dickinson girls have three events left: the 1,600 relay, triple jump and the Midgets have two competitors in the high jump.

"I think they are competing hard," Michaelson said. "I think our best chances are with those jumpers and with the mile relay. They have a shot to score some points."
