BISMARCK -- The Dickinson High girls track and field team got its first taste of competition outside.

The Midgets finished with one individual winner and had a couple pleasant surprises on Friday at the Western Dakota Association Preseason Meet at Bismarck Community Bowl.

"We had some good, solid performances," Dickinson co-head Jay Schobinger said. "We're going to keep working to get better."

Dickinson's junior Ali Moody won the high jump at 4-feet-9 and teammate senior Madison Deibert placed third at the same height. Deibert added a fifth place finish in the triple jump (31-3.5).

Leslie Beaudoin placed third in the 200-meter dash at 27.93 seconds. Schobinger said he was pleased with the senior's performance after sitting out last season due to injury.

"She came in third in the 200 and ran a nice leg in the mile relay," Schobinger said.

The Midgets also had senior Morgan Grosulak and junior Rachel Schroeder finished seventh (1:05.43) and eighth (1:05.67), respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Schroeder tossed the third best javelin throw (91-5). Another junior was Abby Grove placing runner-up in the javelin (96-5).

Dickinson had two pole vaulters in the top eight. Senior Cieanna Leverson vaulted herself to fifth place (8-0). Liz Adsero came into a tied for sixth place (7-6) against Bismarck Century's Myranda Merkel.

Schobinger said it was a good meet to test of the skills of the returners, but now it's time work on the one thing the team needs -- depth.

"We are just going to continue to work hard," Schobinger said. "We don't have a ton of depth right now and the seniors need to supply the leadership and the young kids need to develop. Hopefully, we'll be a competitive group."
