TUCSON, Ariz. - The Dickinson State baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Briar Cliff (Iowa) University Saturday on the first day of the Tucson Invitational, losing by scores of 13-4 and 2-1.
In the first game, the Chargers plated two runs in the top of the first, but the Blue Hawks (8-10) answered with three runs in the bottom half. BCU would tie the game at 3 in the fourth inning, but Dickinson State took the lead right back with a run of its own in the fourth inning.
The Chargers added 10 runs through the final three innings, including five in the sixth inning, to put together a 13-4 victory in seven innings.
Dickinson State’s Joey Buchanan pitched 4 2/3 innings and was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Jacob Hignite went 3 for 4 for the Blue Hawks and had two RBI and a run scored.
The Blue Hawks were outhit 17-11 in the game. BCU’s Alex Colegrove went 2 for 5 from the eighth spot in the order with two doubles and four RBI with a run scored to lead the Chargers’ offense.
Hits were harder to come by in the second game as neither team came away with more than five.
Briar Cliff again got on the board first, earning a run in the bottom half of the first frame. Dickinson State responded with a run in the third after Sagan Osborne brought home Jake Young, but the Chargers regained the lead in the fourth and held on for the 2-1 win.
Osborne and Dylan Skabo each had two hits for the Blue Hawks, and Jacob Cuch was the only other DSU player to record a hit.
Josh Schuller pitched 5 innings for the Blue Hawks, giving up both runs on just three hits with three walks and four strikeouts. On the other side, Arik Ward picked up the win on the mound for BCU after allowing just the one run on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
The Blue Hawks continue action at the Tucson Invitational with a doubleheader against St. Cloud State today with games at 4 and 6 p.m.
