Dickinson State softball takes two from Vikings

VALLEY CITY - The Dickinson State softball team continued its success by tacking on two more wins to its streak.
The Blue Hawks defeated Valley City State 7-6, 5-3 on Friday and extended their win streak to seven games.
DSU didn’t take long to take a lead over the Vikings. In the top of the second, catcher Brianna Grayson hit an RBI double and scored on a wild throw by catcher Olivia Damge.
Valley City responded with a four-run third inning to take a brief lead before the Blue Hawks had a four-run inning of their own for the permanent lead. Seven different players scored a run for DSU and Sullivan and left fielder Justeena Gutierrez each went 3 for 3 with a run.
Regan Lawrence was in the circle for the Blue Hawks and gave up four earned runs on eight hits and struck out seven in seven innings. Opposite Lawrence was Samantha Nalley who was credited with the loss. In 4 1/3 innings, Nalley allowed six runs on 10 hits before Morgan Nalley came in for relief.
Valley City right fielder Shayna Taffinder went 1 for 3 with two runs and a RBI and shortstop Katarina Boychuk went 1 for 2 with two runs.
The Vikings kept it close with the Blue Hawks again in game two and were tied 3-3 from the fourth inning until the seventh.
On the first pitch she saw, Sullivan hit a game-winning two-run home run to complete the sweep. Sullivan finished the game 2 for 4 with a run and 2 RBI. Monique Yslas, Rebecca Lopez, Alex Vargas and Gutierrez each added a run.
Both DSU and Valley City pitchers Tiffany Morgan and Ashley Metcalf threw complete games for their respected teams. Morgan gave up 3 runs on four hits while Metcalf allowed five runs on 10 hits and struck out three.
The weekend series between the Blue Hawks and Vikings travels back to Dickinson for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. today at Dickinson’s North Complex.
