BISMARCK - Like its male counterparts, the Dickinson Trinity girls basketball team trailed early in its contest against Oak Grove. While rebounding from its slow start and cutting into their deficit to make a game out of it, the Titans eventually were defeated by the Grovers 42-36 during the Shiloh Christian Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 5, from Shiloh Christian High School.

Oak Grove (6-3) senior guard Kelyn Johnson alone outscored Dickinson Trinity 9-8 in the first quarter, as the Region 1 team jumped out to a 18-8 advantage at the end of the frame. The Grovers carried a 25-16 cushion into halftime before the Titans roared back.

Led sophomore forward Abbey Kubas, who scored eight of her team-high 18 points in the third quarter, Dickinson Trinity entered the final frame down 30-29 after holding its opponent to just one field goal through the first eight minutes of the second half.

Johnson helped keep the Titans (5-4) at bay, scoring seven of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter. The senior was the lone Grover scorer in double-figures, while Titans had two, as senior guard Bre Tessier complimented Kubas with 11 points.

“We dug ourselves a hole again, but played some of our best basketball in the last three quarters,” Dickinson Trinity head coach Carter Fong said. “We lost the turnover battle again, but the mistakes we are making come from wanting it too much and forcing the issue. We also like our perimeter shot selection, even though those shots aren’t falling. Those are correctable problems, and we are optimistic that we’ll improve.”
