WINNIPEG - The Dickinson State men’s and women’s basketball teams finished its first day back with a pair of losses.
The men’s team lost to the University of Regina (Saskatchewan) 83-79 in the first round of the Wesmen Classic Saturday afternoon at the University of Winnipeg (Manitoba).
DSU junior post Mackenson Odenier led his team with 21 points and nine rebounds. Regina’s Brandon Tull also had a team-high 21 points. Tull was 6 for 14 from the field and added six rebounds.
The Blue Hawks shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half and outscored the Cougars 53-46, but were not able to follow through and clinch the win.
Regina plays University Men-Ottawa today at 8 p.m., while DSU faces Brandon University (Manitoba) at 10 a.m. in the consolation semifinals.
After defeating Winnipeg 70-64 in its final game before winter break on Dec. 15, DSU lost to the Wesmen 61-53 Saturday in the first of two exhibition games.
DSU sophomore guard TaRicka Linzy finished with a team-high 17 points, followed by senior forward Jess Bygate with a double-double, 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Winnipeg’s first-year guard Skyler Boulanger was named the player of the game and went 6 for 7 from the floor, finished with a team-high 12 points and eight rebounds.
Winnipeg started with a 22-16 lead in the first half and went into halftime up 31-26. DSU couldn’t fully catch up and was outscored 30-28 in the second half.
The Blue Hawks and Wesmen finish up their exhibition series at 2 p.m. today.
