TUCSON, Ariz. - The Dickinson State softball team isn’t showing signs of slowing down.
The Blue Hawks swept another day of play with wins over Denison University (Ohio) and University of Puget Sound (Wash.) on Friday.
In game one, DSU shut out the Big Red 10-0. The Blue Hawks catcher Claudia Torres, shortstop Alex Vargas and center fielder McKenzie Kenobbie each scored two runs. Torres went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI, Vargas finished 2 for 3 with a double, triple and three RBI and Kenobbie went 2 for 4.
DSU scored its 10 runs over the first three innings and starting pitcher Regan Lawrence kept Denison at bay. The senior threw a two-hit complete game with six strikeouts and one walk. Offensively, Lawrence scored a run and two RBI.
Other DSU scorers were third baseman Janell LaRont, first baseman Taylor Ursel and left fielder Morgan Glowa.
Denison pitcher Erin Laswell was tagged with the loss and gave up 10 runs - eight earned - on 10 hits over five innings.
Puget Sound started the game off by putting DSU in a 3-0 deficit. But the Blue Hawks’ offense and defense took over quickly. Lawrence hit a leadoff triple and was tagged at home when Glowa grounded into a fielder choice. The Blue Hawks scored a pair of runs in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
DSU second baseman Monique Yslas went 3 for 4 with three runs, Lawrence added two runs and LaRont was 2 for 2 with a run and two RBI.
Freshman pitcher Alexzandria Watson started for the Blue Hawks but was relieved by Lawrence after an inning. Watson gave up three runs on four hits and Lawrence only allowed one hit and struck out eight.
Complete stats for Puget Sound were not available.
DSU completed its spring break trip but continues its season with another road trip. The Blue Hawks travel to Morningside College (Iowa) for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. on Friday.
