DSU dazzles, defeats Bellevue with buzzer beater

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- With a second left and the game tied at 62, Dickinson State junior guard Kenny Jackson pulled up for a jump shot. As the buzzer sounded, the ball found the bottom of the net, sealing the 64-62 win for the Blue Hawks on Friday, Jan.

BELLEVUE, Neb. - With a second left and the game tied at 62, Dickinson State junior guard Kenny Jackson pulled up for a jump shot. As the buzzer sounded, the ball found the bottom of the net, sealing the 64-62 win for the Blue Hawks on Friday, Jan. 4, at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.

Jackson scored the first two and final four  points, totaling seven on the night.

Junior guard Michael Vandall led the way for the men in blue, earning a game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds. He also contributed an assist, a steal and the team’s only block.

Senior forward Melvin Collins and junior guard Donte Walker also broke double digits, netting 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Bruins (7-11, 1-1 NSAA) led the Blue Hawks (5-8, 1-1 NSAA) 33-27 at the half, but Dickinson State surged in the second half, using an eight-point run to close the gap to 42-38. Another run, this time of 11 points, gave the Blue Hawks a 49-44 lead, with a layup from Vandall as the go-ahead bucket.

A 3-pointer from Jaron Dickson, who scored 16 points, gave the Bruins a 55-52 lead with 4:37 left to play, but the Blue Hawks battled back for the win.

Justin Bessard tallied a team-high 17 points for Bellevue while also adding a steal and a block.

The Blue Hawks limited mistakes, committing just nine turnovers and eight fouls.
