SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The Dickinson State softball team stayed on an even keel for the season Saturday, splitting their two games at the Morningside Tournament.
The Blue Hawks fell short against Morningside College, but came away with a big win over Mount Marty (S.D.) on Saturday.
In the second day of the three-day tournament, DSU lost to Morningside 3-2 after a strong pitching performance from Taysia Kaufman. The Blue Hawks' junior pitcher was nicked for three early runs, but finished out with three scoreless innings.
Janell LaRont led the Blue Hawks with two hits and a RBI, while Claudia Torres added a sacrifice RBI in the fourth inning.
For the Mustangs (9-11), Mackenzie Neely and Kati Steffan each supplied a RBI in the game. The last run from Morningside was an unearned run in the third.

The Blue Hawks (14-14) didn't have any trouble finding their offensive groove against Mount Marty. DSU scored early and often to defeat the Lancers 15-1.
Regan Lawrence tossed all five innings for the Blue Hawks and struck out three. Kaufman supplied three hits, a RBI and scored three runs. LaRont ripped a double and drove in three runs.
Jessica Huseby, who didn't get a hit against Morningside, went 4-for-4 with three RBI and scored two runs.
The Blue Hawks conclude their trip today against Midland (Neb.) and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) starting at 11 a.m. today.
