HASTINGS, Neb. -- Records fell as the Dickinson State wrestling team cruised to a Northern Region championship Saturday at Hastings College.
The Blue Hawks had seven champions, four runner-ups and a fifth place while scoring a region-record 189 team points.
"It shows you where we're at," DSU coach Thadd O'Donnell said. "We looked to just compete every time we're out there and we definitely got after it."
Nick Zumwalt upset top-seeded Jeremy Garvin of Briar Cliff with a 3-2 decision against 157. Fresh off a technical fall in the semifinals, senior 165-pounder Stanton Schlecht decisioned Briar Cliff's Sammy Johnson 4-1.
At 184, senior Brett Owen continued his hot streak, earning a technical fall and two major decisions en route to a title. He defeated Northwestern College's Cory Spree by a 15-4 major decision in the finals.
Senior Matt Michaelson needed just two wins to beat Northwestern's Nic Leither by a 10-5 decision at 197. Jake Kallestad, who bumped up from 197 to heavyweight less than a month ago, put the finishing touches on a regional title by beating Dana College's Jon Wilbourne by a 7-2 decision.
Two Blue Hawks even beat teammates in their championship matches.
Senior Eli Huizar Zuniga edged junior Nathen Schweitzer 2-1 at 141 and Angel Olea was named 125 champion after freshman Isaac Romero forfeited to him.
Jose Serrato (149) and Shane Bennett (174) both had to settle for second-place finishes. Bennett, the No. 2-ranked 174-pounder in the NAIA, fell to third-seeded Tom Eaton of Northwestern College by a 10-7 decision.
"Shane wrestled well at times, but then he didn't compete when he needed to," O'Donnell said. "We lost it at the end when we quit wrestling."
Cameron Schrempp was the only Blue Hawk not to finish either first or second. The 174-pounder, who entered the tournament seeded second, fell to Eaton in the semifinals and finished fifth.
Schrempp had two of just four DSU loses on the day.
"We're doing well right now, now we need to carry this over for a couple weeks and not have any letdowns," Thadd O'Donnell said.
