DSU's Lazaro wins at Battle of the Rockies

GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- Dickinson State junior Bryden Lazaro marched to an individual championship at the Battle of Rockies open tournament with four straight wins on Saturday.

GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- Dickinson State junior Bryden Lazaro marched to an individual championship at the Battle of Rockies open tournament with four straight wins on Saturday.

Lazaro defeated Skylor Davis of Simon Fraser (British Columbia) by an 11-4 major decision for the 125-pound title. Lazaro collected two pins and another major decision en route to his win.

"I thought we competed really well up and down the lineup," DSU head coach Thadd O'Donnell said. "We had guys at pretty stacked weight classes that wrestled pretty well.

DSU seniors Brad Steele (149) and Kevin Keisler (197) took third. Steele defeated Northwest College's (Wyo.) Jake McCormick in a 14-5 major decision. Keisler used an 8-3 major decision to defeat Great Falls' (Mont.) Dylan Lemery.

DSU junior Jesse Hellinger lost a 3-2 decision to Garrett DeMers, an unattached wrestler from Montana State-Northern, in the third place match.

The No. 9-ranked Blue Hawks also had Matt Chambers (133) and Brian Klevis (heavyweight) place sixth.

The Blue Hawks continue their season traveling to the Chadron State (Neb.) dual at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
