In his first varsity basketball game, Bowman County sophomore Caleb Duffield put on a show.
The 5-foot-10 guard contributed in a multitude of ways, piling up 35 points on 14-for-19 shooting from the field and 5 of 8 from beyond the arc while snatching five steals during a 83-59 victory over Richardton-Taylor during the first night of the 2018 Roughrider Tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 11, from the Knights of Columbus Activities Center.
"It feel like I was where I was suppose to be," Duffield remarked on his debut. "I always feel like I play pretty well when I start and tonight, things felt pretty good."
Duffield produced the game's first points on a corner 3-pointer after receiving a pass from junior forward Jacob Svihovec.
Up against a fierce and aggressive 1-3-1 zone defense from the Raiders, Bowman County picked its spots on how to attack. At times, the Bulldogs looked inside for Svihovec, who had six of the teams first 12 points. Other times, when the Richardton-Taylor collapse on the interior, Svihovec and 6-foot-4 senior forward Brian Anaya would pass the ball into the corner, where Duffield and senior guard Jason Ortiz were positioned on the floor.
"I was just staying in the corner ready to shoot, drive or kick it out for an open guy," Duffield said. "We were just working to get the best possible shot that we can get."
When the zone worked, it caused turnovers and many loose balls that the Raiders and Bulldogs dove to the floor to get. But when it didn't work, Richardton-Taylor committed fouls. After the first eight minutes of play, the team in blue was whistled nine times, putting Bowman County into the double bonus shortly after.
"If you're going to be aggressive, you are going to pick up some fouls," Raiders head coach Bryan Floberg said. "That was partly my fault for not looking at the clock for fouls, but we want to more aggressive than what we were last year and at times, I think we looked good."
The Bulldogs led 30-19 midway through the second period before pulling away with a 12-1 run. Duffield capped the surge with a layup off of a steal, 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, giving his team a 42-20 advantage at the break.
"Caleb Duffield, a sophomore kid in his first game shot the lights out, it was awesome to see," Bowman County head coach Nick Walker said.
At the start of the second half, Richardton-Taylor jumped out to an 8-0 run. Collin Kuntz converted a three-point play, cutting the deficit to 42-28. Multiple times in the second half, the Raiders cut the gap to 14 in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs always had an answer. Svihovec and Anaya converted in the paint, thwarting any chance of a comeback.
The duo combined for 35 points - Svihovec 23, Anaya 12 - on 13 of 20 shooting from the field. Kuntz led the way for the Raiders, scoring 18 points and grabbing seven rebounds before fouling out.
Bowman County had a 16-point lead at the end of the third quarter before stretching to as much as a 28-point advantage in the fourth.
"I give the kids from Richardton-Taylor credit, they played hard. I knew they would, they're a tough group of kids" Walker said. "They had a great football year that's carried into basketball, but I'm proud of our kids. ... We had a good push in the end of the second quarter and in middle of the third into the fourth, so I'm proud of our kids."
