Duluth sees fifth-snowiest winter on record

DULUTH, Minn. - A spring storm Wednesday made it feel more like winter in parts of Minnesota, and the snow it dumped on Duluth made this season the city’s fifth snowiest on record.
The Duluth airport received 7.2 inches of snow as of 7 a.m. Thursday, boosting the 2013-14 total to 125.3 inches.
The heaviest snow stayed south of the Duluth-Superior, Wis., area. Parts of Pine County and northwestern Wisconsin received more than a foot. Farther south, Isanti received 19 inches of snow, while southern parts of the Twin Cities metro area saw mainly rain.
To the north, the Iron Range saw little if any accumulation. Ely and Grand Rapids reported only a half-inch of accumulation.
Last year the Duluth area saw repeated rounds of heavy snow in April en route to the city’s third-snowiest winter on record, at 129.4 inches. The city’s snowiest winter was 1995-96 with 135.4 inches, followed by 1949-50 with 131.8 inches. The fourth snowiest was 1996-97, when 128.2 inches fell.
