East sweeps West on Day 1 of Class A state baseball tournament

MANDAN -- Wahpeton, the No. 3 seed from the East Region, had three insurance runs in the seventh inning to advance out of the quarterfinals of the Class A state baseball tournament.

The Huskies defeated Williston, the West Region's No. 2 seed, 7-3 in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Cole Gilles led Wahpeton (22-14), going 2-for-4 with a triple and a RBI. Alex Lunneborg supplied three hits and one RBI.

Tyler Gripentrog tossed seven innings, striking out 11 for the win.

Jacob Brokaw and Cory Vinger each had two hits to lead the Coyotes (12-20).

Landon Uetz homered and drove in five runs as East Region champion West Fargo powered past Bismarck St. Mary's in the quarterfinals.

Andy Young struck out six to pick up the complete-game victory in the five-inning game while Kory Wolden had a pair of doubles, a RBI and scored three runs for the Packers (31-5), who take on Wahpeton tonight in the semifinals.

The Saints (9-24) face Williston today in the consolation semifinals.

Nicholas Salentine struck out eight and scattered five hits as Fargo Shanley blanked Bismarck in the quarterfinals to secure an East Region opening-round sweep.

Paul Rydell drove in Jacob Salentine for the Deacons' (21-16) only run in the second inning. Shanley plays Wahpeton at 3:30 p.m. today in the semifinals.

Andrew Dill pitched five innings, giving up four hits to take the loss for Bismarck, which faces Dickinson at 10:30 a.m. today in the consolation semifinals.
