When the Dickinson High girls hockey team found itself in the penalty box, Devils Lake went on the offensive.

Nonetheless, being in the penalty box didn't stop the Midgets from battling.

The Firebirds used a two-goal first period and netted two more goals on the second en route to a 4-3 win over Dickinson on Saturday at the Dickinson Recreation Center.

"The penalties kind of set us back in the first period, but I felt like the girls tried really hard in the second and third period," Dickinson head coach Lauren Hansen said. "We finished off the game well."

Devils Lake scored three power-play goals and the Midgets' comeback fell a goal short. The game marked Devils Lake's first win of the season. The Firebirds are now 1-4, while the Midgets remain winless at 0-6.

"I thought we played really well," Dickinson freshman Kira Zastoupil said. "We should make more of our games like that one, because we played a full three periods."

Dickinson's Brittany Chamberlain was tagged with a slashing penalty at the 15-minute, 48-second mark of the first period. Three seconds later, Devils Lake's Kya Knoke scored the team's first goal on a quick faceoff shot.

Paige Schweitzer, a Dickinson eighth-grader, went into the penalty box after a tripping call. Maranda Hoffner connected with Carleen Shively shortly thereafter on the team's second power-play goal.

"I thought we played well the first period," Devils Lake head coach Allan Eisenzimmer said. "We're shorthanded right now, but we were moving well."

However, the Midgets and Firebirds were tied with eight shots on goal after the first period. Dickinson's shots on goal finally started to go in during the second and third periods. The Firebirds held the shot advantage 29-27, while Dickinson's first line of Zastoupil, Rachel Lantz and Kayla Wallace scored all three goals.

"I feel like we have four lines that we can rely on," Hansen said. "That first one, they made some opportunities happen."

Zastoupil scored the Midgets' first goal 24 seconds into the second period.

"It was a pretty exciting moment," Zastoupil said with a smile. "We were pretty pumped."

When the Midgets countered, the Firebirds retaliated. Shively netted her second goal of in the second period, but Wallace punched right back to bring the game within one.

With 1:38 left in the second, Knoke scored Devils Lake's fourth and final goal.

Devils Lake junior goaltender Emma Danielson isn't letting a broken finger stop her. She made 24 saves.

Lantz scored Dickinson's final goal in the third period. The sophomore forward was unassisted on the play. Paige Fahlstrom had 25 saves for Dickinson.

"I was concerned, because we're missing one complete line and I thought we were going to be too tired to keep going," Eisenzimmer said. "Our goalie and forward lines played well at the end."

Dickinson continues its season by traveling to Mandan at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
