BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. - For Dickinson High head coach Pete Dobitz, wrestling is a lot like dancing - or at least that’s what he tells his team.
“I always tell them, ‘You dance with the lady you brought there.’ That means you continue to do what you’ve done to get there,” Dobitz said. “You’re going to wrestle how you’ve done to get there. … You want to continue to be aggressive, and that’s a style we preach to our boys in the room, so that’s what we expect our boys to do.”
His team has stayed successful, and that was evident in the first day of the Belle Fourche Invitational, as his team wrestled soundly, Dobitz said, on its way to fourth for the day.
“Overall, we wrestled strong. We’re still wrestling aggressive,” Dobitz said. “We could be a little bit more aggressive, but we’re starting to get into the style of wrestling that we want to be with our moves so that we’re not on the defensive.”
Jaren Berger at 106 pounds, Tom Irwin at 145, Jaret Lee at 152, Rafael Lopez at 170 and Dual Keck at 285 all made it to the semifinals of their brackets and will wrestle their final two matches this morning.
“I think every one of them that’s in the semifinals have a pretty good shot,” Dobitz said. “Of those guys that we’ve got in there, we should get a majority of them into the finals. I don’t see us taking step back.”
While three Midgets couldn’t compete due to injury, Dobitz said he was pretty pleased with the showing of even the younger wrestlers he brought with for the event.
“We brought the whole crew down here,” Dobitz said. “We’re seeing progress through the whole program, not just my varsity guys. We’re getting some good showings from our JV guys wrestling varsity South Dakota kids.”
Even for the Dickinson wrestlers who didn’t make it to the semifinals, Dobitz said he wanted his team to take baby steps toward peaking in their performances, and he said he’s starting to see that.
In fact, he hopes those who did make the semifinals find improvements of their own for the rest of the tournament.
“That’s the approach you want to have,” Dobitz said. “Do you want to lose early on in the year? No, but do you want to learn from losing earlier in the year? Hopefully… that way you’re not just peaking physically, but mentally as well so you’re wrestling well at the end-of-the-year tournaments.”
