WAPHETON -- The Dickinson High boys golf team rose to the occasion at the East-West Invitational.

Seniors Tanner Halter and Luke Hanel have led the Midgets all year, but this time it was senior Austin Fournier grabbing the low score on Friday at Dakota Winds Golf Course.

Fournier carded an 82, which leaves him 13 strokes behind leader Connor Holland of West Fargo.

"He (Fournier) came out and he played well," Dickinson head coach Sara Berglund said. "There were a few holes here and there, but overall he played well and I think that helped him build his confidence."

The top four scores for Dickinson finished within three strokes of each other. Halter and Hanel each scored an 84, while freshman Carter Donnan had an 85.

"Overall I'm very happy with how our team did," Berglund said. "They've never played this course and on how they played I'm really pleased. They are in good spirits for the second day."

With the 69 posted by Holland, he leads teammate Nick Evin by five strokes. It's safe to say the field is very competitive.

"The competition is really high," Berglund said. "I really love this tournament a lot and I know the guys look forward to this tournament every year because we get to see new courses and golf with the guys from the East. It's good experience for them and it gets them ready for the regional tournament."

The Midgets also had junior Shay Ridl shoot a 90 and freshman Alex Priebe a 92.

Dickinson concludes the invite beginning at 7 a.m. today. Berglund said since the team has a sense of how the course plays and its totals should be lower.

"It will be fun with all the regrouping and see who rises to the occasion," Berglund said. "I'm excited to see the scores overall tomorrow."
