GRAND FORKS(AP) -- A proposal to extend snowmobile trails south on the Grand Forks Greenway has hit some rough patches.

Several City Council members say they'll oppose the plan for fear that hordes of "rogue" snowmobilers would wreak havoc on the south end of town.

City staff are proposing to expand the trail on the Greenway park area along the Red River dike to seven miles. It would create one of the longest groomed urban snowmobile trails in the region.

Opponents worry about snowmobilers wrecking cross country ski trails, and riding up and down the dikes and sometimes into residents' back yards.

Council member Terry Bjerke, who represents a ward in the northern part of the city where there already are snowmobile trails, said he has not heard any complaints.
