Two years ago the Glen Ullin-Hebron boys basketball team went winless.
Last year the Bearcats were 1-19 overall winning the first game of the season 58-57 overtime against Beach.
GUH repeated its early season success with a 58-53 win over Richardton-Taylor to open the season.
The Bearcats have nearly everyone returning from last year’s team with the exception of Steve Wiedmer, who graduated.
The returners for GUH include seniors Mitchell Bettenhausen (6-foot, guard), Adam Gietzen (6-1, forward), Chance Glass (6-0, forward) and Matt Emter (6-0, guard).
Last season, Bettenhausen led the Bearcats with 12.2 points per game. GUH averaged 47.6 points per game and allowed 71.2.
The junior class contains Chase Berger (5-11, guard), Ty Wehri (6-2, forward), Lucas Wagner (6-1, forward) and Jaden Schmidt (6-0, guard). The Bearcats have a lone sophomore Jaron Morman (5-10, guard) and freshman Bailey Morman (6-2, forward) searching for playing time.
In the Bearcats first game of the season, Gietzen scored a team-high 24 points, while Bettenhausen drained four 3-pointers en route to supplying 19. Wagner, Berger and Glass combined for 15 points.
A new year brings renewed hope and a new format of the Region 7 Tournament. This year there will be no District 13 or 14 Tournaments, so every team will make the Region 7 Tournament and GUH will be looking to make some noise with a familiar cast of players.
