MANDAN - With a win at the Region 5 team qualifier on Thursday, May 16, the Heart River boys golf team is heading back to state, looking to improve on its second-place finish last year.

The Cougars swung a day-low 336, while Dickinson Trinity took second with 354 and Western Morton County earned the final state bid with a 355.

Heart River senior Jett Mattson, who finished eighth at state in 2018, won the qualifier with a 78, six strokes over par the Prairie West Golf Course.

Beulah seventh-grader Champ Hettich placed second with 79 strokes, while Heart River sophomore Jacob Robb took third with 82. Dickinson Trinity sophomore Cole Fitterer, Western Morton County sophomore Gehrig Geiss and Titans junior Chris Schneider all tied for fourth with an 84.

Andrew Narum, a junior out of Bowman County, Heart River junior Shay Olson, Western Morton County sophomore Grant Gerving and Killdeer sophomore Zack Andersen rounded out the top 10 and earned spots in the individual state championship.
