Day one of the NDHSAA Class A state girls golf tournament began Monday morning at Edgewood Golf Course in Fargo with Dickinson finishing in 10th out of 12 teams after the first round, shooting a 365.

The 12 teams are made of the top six ranked teams from the WDA and EDC championships.

The Midgets came as a team after placing fourth in the WDA tourney last week, something they last achieved in 2015. This was uncharted territory for the majority of the team with only one player experiencing state level before, senior Lola Homiston.

It has been an exciting experience so far for Dickinson’s six golfers. Homiston is in a three-way tie for 10th place and has an overall score of 80. The other two seniors, Abigail Goettle and Chloe Kraenzel, are tied in 50th, carding a 93.

The past two years Homiston was on the cusp of obtaining a top 10 spot and with those challenges, she has sharpened her craft. She held 8th early in the morning, and had a birdie on the second hole. Homiston was equal in scoring on the front and back nine, shooting 40, and was only eight strokes away from par on the course, and individual leader, Hannah Herbel of Bismarck Century.

Junior Hazel Emter and freshman Tristyn Baumgartner kept right under 100, each scoring a 99 and are caught in a five-way tie for 67th. The Midgets’ youngest player, eighth grader Kyndall Peterson, just barely kept out of the bottom 10 with a 103, ranked at 76. Head coach John Spry saids that the course was in excellent condition on the first day, with rather quick undulating greens.

Mandan held the top of the board early, but were overtaken by Fargo Davies, who have three golfers inside the top 10. Bismarck Century sit in second, with Herbel leading by four strokes.

A lot is still undecided, with room for improvement for Midgets as they head for day two of the tournament.
