The very best from across the state competed for the past two days at the Edgewood Golf Course in the Class A girls golf state tournament. Dickinson improved slightly from their day one performance, finishing 9th as a team. Senior Lola Homiston, in her third state competition, finished in a tie for 6th, earning All-State honors.

“It was great, the weather was amazing and I was playing so well the second day,” Homiston said. “It was just an awesome experience.”

Fargo Davies were victorious in the team competition with a score of 629. However, the individual leader was tied at 151, between junor Hannah Herbel of Bismarck Century and sophomore Lexi Bartley of Fargo Davies. The two settled a winner going five additional holes, that was decided from a birdie by Bartley.

Homiston tied for six place with senior Ava Olson of Fargo Davies, each carding a 155. After placing 10th on day one, Homiston made up some serious ground in the second round hitting a birdie on the first hole. Her score of 75, put her a stroke away from the best round of the day by any golfer.

“Started very strong, made great decisions all day long,” Dickinson head coach John Spry said. “I am extremely proud of her, I told her she was the catalyst for the team. She inspired everyone and was the spark for everyone to do better for themselves and for the team.”

Homiston said to the Press that she felt no pressure and she was completely relaxed after putting up decent numbers on day one. Homiston ranking sixth in the entire state was a great achievement in itself, but she went into it as any true athlete and strived for gold.

“That was my personal best, 75, and I was hitting the ball really well today and it just felt great,” Homiston said. “I came in thinking, ‘I want to win.’ I didn't quite meet my goal, but I played well up to my standards I would say … It can be anybody's game on any given day. I was only four strokes off from the title and I easily could have made those up.”

With the exception of Homiston, the rest of the Midgets started on the back nine. No. 2 senior Chloe Kraenzel showed improvement as well, getting two strokes off her day one score. She finished 45th overall with a total of 184.

Kyndall Peterson broke under a 100 and took the No.3 spot for Dickinson. She had a number of bogeys on the back nine that had her 20 strokes away from par.

“She made some better decisions (on day two),” Spry said. “I explained to her, ‘Sometimes going for the hero shot is to actually take your medicine, lay up and go from there. Instead of trying to make a miracle shot through the trees and stuff.’”

Senior Abigail Goettle held the fourth spot and though she had some trouble on her front nine as she couldn’t hit par on any hole, she managed to settle on her back nine carding a 44 and an overall of 93 — same from day one.

After all was said and done, Spry witnessed and partook of the high emotions of his seniors who have now played their final tournament in their high school careers.

“It was pretty emotional for each of their last putts for my seniors ... I can only hope and pray that the three of them go to college and play college golf. That is my hopes and dreams and prayers for all my seniors,” Spry said. “After the season, we are going to feel the loss of our seniors, however we have a good core of golfers coming up so I'm looking forward to next season and years to come.”
