GRAND FORKS - As the Grand Forks Red River boys hockey team was on the ice celebrating an undefeated season after Saturday’s state championship game at Ralph Engelstad Arena, Bismarck High junior defenseman Ben Yantes was heading to the emergency room.
Yantes suffered a broken femur in the third period after colliding with a Red River player while the two chased after a loose puck.
Yantes had surgery late Saturday night into Sunday morning, his mother Pam Yantes said.
A group of Red River players later visited Yantes at the hospital in Grand Forks.
“The amazing act of kindness by these young men was very honorable and makes us realize that great things can come out of adversity,” Pam Yantes said in an email. “They wished him a speedy recovery and were very sorry that this injury had to happen. It was unintentional, but very devastating.”
Pam Yantes said her son had a titanium rod placed in the shaft of his femur to stabilize the fracture and is expected to return to Bismarck on Tuesday.
Red River beat Bismarck 4-3 to finish the season 27-0-0, the first time in nearly 50 years that a team finished undefeated in North Dakota high school hockey.
