JAMESTOWN — The Dickinson High gymnastics team flooded the top of the standings at the 2018 State Individual Meet held on Saturday, Feb. 24 from Jamestown High School.

DHS placed four finishers in the top 12 of every event, as well as six top-10 finishes in vault.

That event was won by Bismarck High Julia Red Wing, who topped the charts with a score of 9.650. Red Wing, who a week earlier finished second in the all-around at the WDA tournament, successfully defended her all-around state crown, finishing ahead of the pack with a score of 37.617.

Dickinson seventh-grader Teghan Hoff earned runner-up in the all-around with a total score of 37.450. After winning the West Region all-around title, sophomore Ayanna Fossum followed closely behind in third place with a score of 37.433.

In her first state appearance, Hoff walked away with hardware after being crowned the state champion in the beam. Collecting a score of 9.467, she outscored runner-up Minot eighth-grader Bella Price by a mere .017 margin.

"I was super surprised," Hoff said. "I didn't believe it when I found out I got first."

Her chances of performing over the weekend seemed slim after appearing to suffer a debilitating injury during a dual against Mandan High on Feb. 9.

Racing toward the vault at a high rate of speed, one of Hoff's hands slipped on the table as she began her ascent. Losing control in the air, she landed on the back of her neck. She would leave the dual and spend the night in the hospital.

Cleared just days before the trip to Jamestown, Hoff entered the state tournament without any fear.

"I wasn't too worried or scared because I thought what are the chances of that happening again," Hoff said. "It just felt good to be back and contribute to the team again."

After finishing as the state runner-up in the all-around last season, Fossum put together a near-perfect year, winning the all-around in every meet she participated in this season.

She won the state championship in the floor exercise with a score of 9.667, one of her highest scores of the season.

However, unable to capture that elusive all-around state title, Fossum was disappointed in the result, but used perspective in looking back at her year.

"I wasn't completely happy I guess you can say, but I just couldn't be mad about it," Fossum said. "I had a great season. It's unfortunate how it ended but, I'll just keep my head up and keep working hard for the years to come."

A day earlier, Fossum celebrated Dickinson's 12th state team championship in program history.

She's a member of a Midgets team that has won three consecutive state championships, included two seasons (2016, 2018) where they've run the table in a season.

"It's kind of shocking," Fossum said of the team's success. "We have a lot of pressure on us. Doing good all year long, then getting to state, hoping to crush everyone again and win by at least five points is a lot of pressure. But we just try to take it all in. It's just crazy to us."
