BISMARCK -- Dickinson High junior Jess Herauf improved upon her state-best and school-record throw in the javelin Friday and secured the Midgets' only event win at the Bismarck High-Bismarck Century Invitational girls track and field meet.
Herauf had a toss of 130 feet, 4 inches to win at the Bismarck Community Bowl. It was an improvement 2 feet, 3 inches on her previous best set April 16 at the Carlson Booster Meet. She also placed fourth in the discus and 400 meters and was a part of Dickinson's second-place 800 relay team.
"A pretty good day for Jess again. We kind of picked and chose where we wanted to go with her," Dickinson co-coach Dave Michaelson said. "The discus didn't go as well for her as she'd like, but she had another good day again. She's our horse. There's no doubt about it."
Bismarck won the meet with 166.5 points. The Midgets were fifth with 87 and Dickinson Trinity finished eighth out of 10 teams with 24 points.
Brie Lynch took third in the 400 with a time of 1 minute 1.04 seconds. She was the first of five Dickinson or Trinity runners who finished in the top eight.

Kara Froelich finished second in the 100 hurdles in 49.74 seconds. She was third in the 110 hurdles at 16.28 seconds, a full second behind Bismarck's Twila Moser, who won both events.
"We're making strides toward getting people where we want them and getting people qualified," Michaelson said.
Andrea Jirges took fifth in the 200 (26.33) and sixth in the 100 (12.99) to lead the Titans.
Their 400 relay team of Ashley Sickler, Kelsey Barth, Kendra Kovash, Jordyn Bender was edged by Century, which ran a 4:13.13. Trinity had a 4:13.35.
