Hermanson seals big win at Badlands Circuit Finals

MINOT -- When he entered the PRCA Badlands Circuit a few years ago, Mandan's Cole Hermanson had two goals in mind -- winning a year-end money title or an aggregate title at the circuit finals.

Hermanson accomplished one of his goals in 2008 by winning the bull riding aggregate title.

On Sunday afternoon, the former two-time high school champion accomplished his second goal of winning the year-end championship. And he also won another weekend average at the finals and Y's Men's 55th annual Rodeo at the All Seasons Arena.

"It feels great," Hermanson said. "You work towards this all year and to finally have it happen, it's great."

Hermanson's domination in the event should serve as a momentum boost when he heads to Pocatello, Idaho for the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo April 7-10, 2010. It will be the second trip there for the Mandan bull rider and he is hoping last year's experience will translate into a better outcome.

"I didn't do very well at all last year," said Hermanson, who closed out the weekend with the highest bull ride score (87) of the rodeo. "I just had one of those weekends where nothing goes right, so hopefully this time I can go down there and do better than I did."

If Hermanson can perform well enough, he'll earn a spot at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, which is the dream of any and all rodeo competitors.

"That's the goal and I want to be there but I know that I have to do well in Pocatello first so that's what I'm going to concentrate on," he said.

Scott Montague's yearly money earnings proved to be insurmountable and as he went on to capture his seventh Badlands Circuit bareback biding title.

The Rapid City, S.D., cowboy will be joined by aggregate winner Joe Gunderson at the National Circuit Finals. Gunderson won his second round of the weekend Sunday with a score of 83, which gave him an average of 323.

Former all-around champion J.B. Lord just needed one more solid time in the steer wrestling to earn a average title.

Lord was the last man to go and needed a time under 6 seconds, but his steer dodged him when we went to make the catch and he no-timed, his first of the weekend. The missed opportunity moved Clay Cowan onto the next level as he finished with a total of 19.4 seconds. Tyler Haugen was the year-end winner in the event.

In a similar scenario, Parshall's Preston Billadeau and Upham's Jesse Fredrickson only needed to break a 9.5 second run to win the Team Roping weekend average. But like Lord, it wasn't meant to be. Their calf ended up against the barrier, slowing their completed time to 16.0. Mark Brockmueller and Dustin Harris won the average with a 28.5.

Rollie Wilson scored a 77 on a horse called Red Cloud to win the saddle bronc weekend title. Wilson's 77 moved his point total up to 365 on four cleared. He will join year-end money winner Cole Elshere in Pocatello.

It came down to the last run of the afternoon in the tie-down roping but it was Barry Blair moving on with a total time of 35.5 on four head. Blair was in last place in the money earnings entering the weekend but he will join money champion Justin Scofield at the finals.

While she didn't have the best weekend, Mandan's Britany Fleck still ended up with a year-end title in the Barrel Racing.

The Badlands Circuit Barrel Racer of the Year will be joined by aggregate winner Lisa Lockhart in Pocatello. Lockhart, who is no stranger at the national level, finished the weekend with a total time of 52.74, just edging Joey Painter's 53.05.
