Throwback Thursday wasn’t just celebrated on Instagram.
The Dickinson High, Bismarck High and Bismarck Century gymnastics teams wore vintage uniforms during the regular-season finale.
There might be some magic left in those uniforms as the Midgets scored a season-high 148.875 during the Glenn Heiser Invitational at DHS gymnasium.
“The girls hit on everything,” Dickinson head coach Kent Van Ells said. “It was just a really good meet right down the line. It was a really fun meet and we have to keep that up.”
Van Ells added about the team’s wearing vintage uniforms: “We don’t throw a lot away here. That was a fun aspect to the meet.”
The Midgets claimed the top three spots in the all-around and at least six gymnasts placed in the top 10 in each event.
Dickinson junior Acacia Fossum - who won the all-around with 38.475 points - couldn’t be more proud of the team.
“On Tuesday, everyone was sore and tired,” said Fossum, who won three of the fourth individual events. “Before the meet, we came together and said, ‘This is the last meet at home, let’s just go out and have fun.’ A lot of them let loose and a lot of them had a really good meet.”
Keana Kudrna placed runner-up in the all-around (37.750). The Dickinson junior won the floor exercise (9.550) and took runner-up on the vault and balance beam.
Dickinson seventh-grader Ayanna Fossum placed third in the all-around (36.975), while freshman Faith Beck was seventh (35.025) and eighth-grader Meghan Ackerman tied for eighth (34.150) with Carissa Albert of Bismarck.
The season finale marked the first time Beck competed in the all-around since the Fargo Davies Invitational on Dec. 20 when she suffered a concussion. Beck didn’t fall on any event on Thursday.
“It was a nice feeling to be back all the way,” Beck said. “I did pretty good, but I can always improve on something.”
Dickinson also received top 10 placements from freshman Karsen Stroh, seventh-grader Brinklyn Schumacher and eighth-grader Dacia Rambousek.
Beck hopes this performance helps motivate the team for the West Region Meet on Feb. 20 in Jamestown.
“It’s a big confidence and I’m excited to go in the WDA and state with my team,” Beck said.
Acacia Fossum has no doubt the team can recreate this performance.
However, the Midgets will have to do it against the top-ranked team in the state - Minot.
“We just have to get Minot out of our head when we go against them,” Fossum said. “A lot of the younger girls get nervous. They just have to remember it’s like any other meet. If they do that, then we can easily get that score again.”
