Hot Shots top Big Sticks 11-6

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- With one out and the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, Badlands batter Kaleb Binstock hit a grand slam to narrow the Hub City lead to 8-6.

ABERDEEN, S.D. - With one out and the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, Badlands batter Kaleb Binstock hit a grand slam to narrow the Hub City lead to 8-6.

However, the Big Sticks couldn't score again and the Hot Shots added three more in the bottom of the eighth en route to a 11-6 win on Wednesday, June 20 at Fossum Field.

The Hot Shots (10-14) built a 3-0 lead in the first, extending it to 5-0 after three innings. The Big Sticks (14-9) first scored in the fourth when Binstock scored Gabe Knowles on a double. Catcher Brayden Olson and outfielder Aaron Fritts also hit doubles, while Knowles had two hits on the day.

The Big Sticks put bat to ball seven times while the Hot Shots had more than doubled their output with 15 hits. Willie Lajoie, who had a lead off home run in the bottom of the eighth, went 4-for-4 on the day, scoring three times while driving in two RBIs. Lajoie ran home in the third off a home run from teammate Derek Marshall.

Hub City saw three Badlands throwers in starter Roman Oliu who lasted 4 ⅓ innings, reliever Nick Jennings, and closer Joe Smith.

Meanwhile, Jackson Olson threw seven innings, striking out seven batters while allowing two runs.

Shortstop Wyatt Setian returned to the lineup, but went 0-for-3 on the night.
