SOUTH HEART - The No. 7-ranked Dickinson Trinity boys basketball team improved to 3-0 in Region 7 play on Thursday, overcoming 24 points from Heart River’s Zane Besler in a 70-55 victory at South Heart High School.

“He had a monster first half,” Trinity head coach Gregg Grinsteinner said of the Cougars’ senior forward. “He and Cauy Shypkoski absolutely killed us. (Besler) was hitting some tough shots, but he was in the zone.”

Shypkoski finished with 13 points for Heart River (6-3, 2-2 Region 7). Caleb Churszch scored eight, and Tristen Schuhrke added five for the Cougars.

Grinsteinner estimated Besler had close to 20 points at halftime, and he challenged his own junior forward Noah Sickler to shadow Besler in the second half. The plan worked as hoped and Trinity (9-2) was able to cool him off, extending a one-point halftime lead for the victory.

“We regrouped and slowed down and did what we wanted,” Grinsteinner said. “We did a better job of holding them to one shot in the second half. … Our kids just stayed with it. We told them it was going to be a grind-it-out game.”

On Trinity’s end, senior guard Lucas Jones scored 22 points and handed out six assists. He hit 5 of 6 from behind the three-point line.

“He was demanding the basketball, but he let the game come to him,” Grinsteinner said. “He ran the show, and when his opportunity came to score, he took advantage of it.”

Senior forward Shawn Stoltz added 18 points and nine rebounds for Trinity. Alex Scherr supplied nine points, and Sickler and Keagan Jacobson each added six.

“It’s a big region win when you go on the road and beat one of the top four teams in the region,” Grinsteinner said.
