MINOT - Kindred coach Perry Piatz’s disappointment with the end of regulation was short-lived.
LaMoure-Litchville-Marion’s Kennedy Witt buried at 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime, and Piatz wasn’t pleased.
“I was mad because we lost the girl in the corner,” Piatz said. “The assistant coach had to grab me and tell me to shake it off.”
Much like Piatz, the Vikings calmed down, securing a 60-57 triumph in the semifinals of the Class B state tournament at the Minot State Dome.
Kindred (26-0), which beat Parshall in overtime on Thursday night, plays for a state title tonight.
“This is exciting and fun, but it takes some life out of you,” Piatz said of the overtime wins. “It’s fun to play in these games. I’m proud of the kids.”
Alexis Piatz had a game-high 18 points, and Brooke Hiatt and Alexandra Erickson added 17 and 15, respectively.
The Vikings held a 54-51 lead after two free throws from Piatz with 15.2 seconds remaining in the game.
On the final play of regulation, Anna Holen found Witt in the left corner. Witt’s shot was still in mid-air when the buzzer sounded.
“Hey, why not?” Alexis Piatz joked about overtime. “We did it (Thursday). Why not try it again?”
In the extra session, Kindred took a five-point lead thanks to a 3-pointer from Brooke Hiatt, her fifth of the game.
Witt answered with another trey, but Sierra Graff’s 1-of-2 performance at the line gave Kindred a three-point lead with 8 seconds to go. Anna Holen’s off-balance 3-pointer was long as the final horn went off.
L-L-M coach Mitch Carlson said he had a good idea Kindred would come out with a vengeance after trailing 35-26 at halftime.
“They were gonna come out guns ablazing,” he said. “We knew they’d be more aggressive. Our game plan was working for a while.”
Kindred trailed by as much as 11 in the first half. Alexis Piatz said her team rallying has been a common theme throughout the season.
