BISMARCK - The Dickinson High boys baseball team opened its 2018 campaign with a pair of losses to Bismarck Century on Thursday, April 19 from the Sanford Sports Complex in Bismarck.

Despite taking an early first-inning lead, the Midgets relinquished five runs in the bottom of third, eventually falling in the first game to the Patriots 8-3. With runs in the fourth and fifth inning, Century won the second game 4-1.

Midgets senior second baseman Ethan Dietz led off the game with a line-drive single to left field. He would score after a bunt from junior third baseman Cody Maier resulted in a error from Century starting pitcher Kade Feeney.

Dickinson senior starting pitcher Chris Zubke scattered three hits through two scoreless innings before being relieved by senior Colton Jones.

After Dickinson quickly recorded two outs in the bottom of the third, the next eight Patriots reached base. Jones walked senior Dawson Weikum and intentionally walked senior Matt Miller before senior Jacob Olson drove in Weikum with an RBI double. Junior infielder Treyton Mattern followed with a two-run single.

Dickinson junior Morgan Wardner relieved Jones, but two more Patriots runs crossed the plate after a pair of Midget errors extended the inning.

The Midgets were held to just three hits as Maier and sophomore Jaren Hugelen added singles in the top of the sixth.

In the back end of the doubleheader, Dickinson again plated a first inning run, but much like the first game, the bats went cold.

Century responded with a run in the bottom of the first inning, took the lead in the fourth and tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth.

DHS loaded the bases without recording an out in the first inning, getting on the board thanks to a RBI groundout from senior catcher Tristen Brunk, but failed to further capitalize.

In the bottom frame, Feeney led off with a ground-ball single. During the next at bat, he stole second base and advanced to third when sophomore Connor Hansen grounded out. Weikum would drive in Feeney with a RBI groundout to tie the score.

After both team failed to produce any run in the next two innings, the Patriots took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth.

With Brunk on the mound, Hanson led off of the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a error. Weikum followed with an RBI triple and was later driven in on a sacrifice fly from Olson.

Hanson added to the advantage with an RBI walk the next inning.
