Midgets gymnastics third at Valley City meet

VALLEY CITY - By its own standards, the Dickinson High gymnastics team struggled on Friday, placing third with 140.350 team points at an invite hosted by Valley City.

Finishing ahead of the Midgets were the host Hi-Liners (141.025 points) and Bismarck High (140.525).

“We had a pretty good day on bars and vault, but floor we had some falls and beam we had a lot of falls,” Dickinson head coach Kent Van Ells said. “We’re not going to beat teams as good as us if we don’t have a good day.”

Dickinson High freshman Ayanna Fossum won the all-around competition with 37.175 points. She placed first on the floor (9.725) and on the bars (9.100) and was second on the beam (8.950) and tied for second on the vault (9.400).

Sophomore Dacia Rambousek was the only other Midget in the top 10 of the all-around, placing seventh with 34.200 points.

Van Ells said Fossum and Rambousek were the only members to stay on the beam for their entire routines, leading to a loss of points and making it tougher to contend for the top spot.

Still, Van Ells found room to be encouraged.

“Considering how difficult we had it today, we know we could be close to (Valley City and Bismarck) despite having a bad meet,” he said. “We know we can be in it. You have to hit the events to win the meet, and that’s what we’re going to be working on.”
